Due to the current level of unemployment in the construction trades, the Apprenticeship Committee has postponed the acceptance of applications to our program for a period of 6 months. If you have already applied for the program and are waiting for the upcoming Aptitude Test, it is still tentatively scheduled for March 27, 2010. However, if you have not yet applied, please call our office in May 2010 to see if we are accepting applications at that time.

I.B.E.W. Apprenticeship Program

The Apprenticeship program is a highly structured training system that combines on the job training with related and supplemental classroom instruction. The Apprenticeship program is designed to train people with little or no prior knowledge of the electrical craft or trade. Apprentices work during the day with an electrical contractor, who pays the apprentice directly for time worked, and then attend classroom instruction in the evening. Class is held twice a week during the school year at the Training Center in Castroville. The rate of pay is based on the level of progress in the program. At the time of this update, a starting apprentice rate of 45% of the Journeyman pay of $39.48 calculates out to show that a beginning apprentice would be earning $17.77 per hour plus the benefits package. Classroom time is not compensated.

Basic Requirements:

You must be physically able to perform electrical construction work. You must not be color-blind. (See "Job Description") The following documents must be submitted to complete the application process:

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Must sign a statement that you are 18 years of age or older on the date of your application. Additionally, if you are offered an apprentice position, you must at that time be able provide official documentation to verify this statement.
  3. Official embossed sealed transcript from High School or college showing that you have completed Algebra I, or its equivalent, with "C" grades or better.
  4. Photo ID.

You must have a Willingness to attend classes as required by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.

State Approved standards adopted by the Tri-County Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee are all part of these requirements as provided by the Shelly-Maloney Act.

Basic Qualifications

Those applicants meeting the above requirements will be scheduled for the written examination consisting of two parts: Algebra and functions, and reading comprehension. Those applicants successfully completing the written examinations will be qualified for an oral interview. Interviewed applicants who receive a passing interview score will have their name and score placed on a Ranking List of eligible applicants. The Applicant's name will remain on this list for a maximum of two years unless selected for indenture prior to that time. Applicants receiving the highest oral interview score will be offered apprenticeship positions first. Those applicants offered apprenticeship positions will be screened for controlled substances.

Five-Year Program

The electrical construction apprenticeship program consists of 10 semesters of Related and Supplemental instruction and a minimum of 8,000 hours of on the job training. Classroom training is held at night and attendance is mandatory. Classroom training is provided on a semester schedule. Typical class schedules are from August through May.
